In the current debate about the planned ban on new combustion engine vehicles by 2035, Mercedes CEO Ola K\u00e4llenius has clearly stated his opinion. In an interview, he warned of possible consequences for the automotive industry that have been largely overlooked. According to K\u00e4llenius, a real \u2018reality check\u2019 is necessary, as reported by the news agency Reuters<\/a>. His opinion: The EU faces a significant economic setback if the ban is not adjusted by 2035. Consumers will still be able to purchase combustion engines until that date.<\/p>\n

In addition to the 21CEO, BMW CEO Oliver Zipser warned in autumn 2024 that the ban was no longer realistic<\/a>. Many experts are therefore calling for new solutions to achieve the CO2 targets, such as synthetic fuels or hybrid drives.<\/p>\n

Despite the steady progress of e-mobility, some regions are still not adequately prepared. for example in terms of expanding the charging infrastructure or in the debate about rising electricity costs. According to K\u00e4llenius, the successful implementation of these and other, including geopolitical, issues is a prerequisite for the long-term transition to e-mobility.<\/a><\/p>\n

The future will show whether the EU sticks to its plans or responds to the warnings from the automotive industry. It is clear that such a goal also depends on social acceptance.<\/p>\n
